The Lords Table
Units in Stock: 1
‘Ye cannot drink the Lord’s cup, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the Lord’s table, and of the table of demons’ (1 Cor. 10:21). What does the Apostle Paul mean by these solemn words in his first letter to the Christians in Corinth? And how does the expression ‘Lord’s table’ relate to ‘Lord’s supper’ in chapter 11 of the same letter? Even if we know the first is not a physical table on which to place the loaf and cup of the supper, we may not grasp its spiritual significance. But when we think of the seriousness with which the apostle writes, surely we should understand what he means by both expressions if we are to live intelligently for God’s glory and the blessing of others. This book examines the wording of the relevant verses in 1 Corinthians, in their context and with reference to other parts of the Bible that shed light on the subject of the Lord’s table. There is a useful Questions and Answers section that crystallises the teaching in a concise, easy-to-remember way, and a section of quotes by respected Bible teachers over the last 200 years. These quotes show that the teaching presented here has long been held by faithful believers. This book is not offered in a controversial or judgmental spirit but with a sincere desire to let God’s Word illumine our understanding so that we might be helped to live up to it, particularly at a time when countries that were once called Christian have become more like first-century pagan Corinth. Robert Wall lives with his wife and family in Birmingham where he attends a gathering of the Lord’s people. He has been an editor of and contributor to Chapter Two’s Bible study magazine Truth & Testimony.
